SEAGUARD

Sea Environmental Awareness and Guard enhanced with Unmanned AI Robotic Detection

The SEAGUARD project, a Horizon Europe initiative, is dedicated to enhancing the security and management of Europe’s maritime borders through an innovative and integrated approach to cross-border surveillance. With illegal activities at sea posing a significant threat to the European Union, SEAGUARD is developing advanced surveillance capabilities that are scalable, flexible, and interoperable across member states — from the Mediterranean to the Nordic countries.

SEAGUARD aims to address the unique border surveillance challenges faced by different regions, utilizing cutting-edge situational awareness technologies. These technologies provide real-time data on the maritime environment, including vessel movements, cargo, and potential threats, which are crucial for effective maritime border security.

The project encompasses the design, development, testing, and deployment of a comprehensive surveillance system that integrates multiple sensing technologies on both fixed and mobile platforms. This includes the use of unmanned vehicles (aerial, surface, and underwater – UxVs), fixed buoys, smart submarine cables, and advanced data analytics combined with decision support tools. The SEAGUARD system is designed to monitor and detect a range of threats, such as illegal border crossings, smuggling, illegal fishing, and potential terrorist activities.

By leveraging new technologies, multi-domain autonomous cooperative platforms, and multimodal communications, SEAGUARD will provide real-time information and situational awareness to border guards and authorities across Europe. This innovative solution aims to empower them to detect and respond to threats from the air, surface, and underwater domains more effectively, ensuring a safer and more secure European maritime environment.
